I flipped there sometime after 10:00pm EST and it was ECW wrestling. WRESTLING!?!?! Of course, it was better than Immortal which they had just shown before. Anyways, SciFi seems bizarrely confused at times about what they are supposed to be showing on their channel.

Maybe they're using a kind of six degrees of separation logic, so ... they figure that people who like sci-fi generally also like cheesy b-movies with a sci-fi or monster theme and therefore should also like cheezy b-movies in general and therefore should also like cheezy Mexican b-movies and therefore should like cheezy Mexican movies with a wrestling theme and therefore, abracadabera!, they should like watching wrestling in general.

Or maybe there is an evolutionary law of cable television that states that over time all channels will develope in such a way that they will ultimately have little to nothing to do with their titles, thus after 20 years MTV had nothing to do with music. Perhaps the Sci-Fi channel is another example of this law in action. In ten years there will be no science ficion on their schedule.

Comedy Central hit that wall several years ago.

Does that mean in ten years the Sci-Fi channel may start showing good films?

If they did, by that point, they would be romance movies or something.
I've never understood why they couldn't show at least one quality sci-fi movie a week. Sometimes the absolutely horrendous "original" movie is okay. However, a solid sci-fi movie each week would be helpful. It was nice when they used to do an anime movie every Saturday morning. What killed that though was they seemed to only have 6-8 movies in rotation.
Here's an idea for them, why don't they do a weekly half-hour show where they interview sci-fi writers, directors, etc.
They just don't seem to understand who their audience is.

years ago there was no cable TV in Chicago, and you would hear about the "Wonderful World of Cable" where since it was a subscription service, there were NO COMMERCIALS, and a gazillion channels with a station of interest for everybody. Since the stations didn't have to rely on popularity, there were no "ratings" and they didn't have to persue the "desirable" demographic.
Yeah, right.

I remember Saturday Anime. I think I saw the same film three times in five weeks. That pretty much killed it for me.
As far ar the "Sci-Fi Originals", they developed a reputation for cheese after such gems as Evolver and Mansquito.

Not enough boobies or explosions. They're catering to the lowest common denominator now. I'd love to see interviews with Timothy Zahn, Mike Stackpole, Aaron Allston, Terry Pratchett, David Drake, etc.

Yep. It feels like they are scrabbling for any audience at all. They've already tried the reality TV route. I'm surprised they didn't have a "Trading Places"-style of show, with teams competing to build their favorite sci-fi movie set.

They tried that. Well, sorta. Remember their Masters of Fantasy series? It was basically a mini-documentary on some sci-fi/fantasy/horror icon. You know, like TSR. They also used to have a show called the Vortex that was basically a roundtable discussion on various topics. This was where I first learned about Greedo shooting first.
Thing is, these shows don't make a lot of money. They ain't PBS, kids. They can't run high quality programming with 20-minute ads for their pledge drive. They have to earn money and that means running movies like Liar Liar.
That's Sci-fi, right? |

I've only had the channel for about 5 years. Before that the local cable company charged you for it and I wasn't about to ante up.

But, those shows are expensive either. I'm not saying they need a ton of them. One would think though that one half-hour show, once a week would be doable and if done right with an interesting host and guests, profitable.
I can survive them running fantasy and horror movies. However, when you've descended to showing wrestling, you need to look at your mission statement.
BTW, what mega conglomerate owns Sci-Fi?

Yeesh! The Vortex coulden't have beenthat expensive! It was a set mikes and a camera! Public access can afford that! Sure, Sci-Fi Buzz was a bit more work, but on a par with local news....Arghhh! No wonder Mike Jerric went to Fox and Friends....at least he gets work!....

Sci-Fi's remake of "Dune" and their version of "Children of Dune", was pretty decent.
It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation. |

For some reason I looked at your post and saw Chicken Of Dune. Now there's a movie they should make. With Bruce Campbell.

Here's an idea for a Sci-Fi show. We could have this guy trapped in a spaceship in outer space. We'll name him Joel... or maybe Mike. Anyway, he and his two robot pals have nothing to do but spend each week watching...
What? Why are you all shaking your heads? Uhhh... you're right. Wrestling is sooo much better. |
