...by going on a 24-hour hunger strike. Man, that's gruelling. I mean, because they never diet or anything so how are they going to handle it! I know that if I didn't eat anything for 24 hours I'd most likely be dead. Kicked the bucket. Bought the farm. Taking down the signpost. Kissed the bishop. Carved the lance. Rung down the curtain. Joined the choir invisible. I'd be a dead parrot.

I'm against the war myself, but this has to be the lamest protest ever. And something tells me it won't make any difference for many people, like the female cast of Desperate housewifes.
On the other hand, it could do Steven Seagal and John Travolta some service. Are they joining? |

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. What a bunch of shallow, self-centered chickencrap idiots.

"We have been continually sheltered from the actual cost of war from the beginning," says human rights activist Meredith Dearborn. "Now it is time to bring the pain and suffering of war home. We are putting our bodies on the line for peace."
First of all, nothing about this is going to expose people to the cost of a war, let alone convince the US government to end it. Second, these people are emphatically not putting their lives on the line for anything. It's a "rolling fast," where they starve for 24 hours, then pass to someone else. Nobody doing this is going to be in any danger, let alone in the kind of danger the people fighting the war are currently in.
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

This is perhaps the most ominous part of the article (speculating what would happen if they really went on a diet):
quote: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences warned that, with three out of five Best Actor nominees dead of starvation, they may be forced to give the Oscar to Steven Seagal.

Too bad they are protesting the IMAGINARY war and not the real one.
Say, I think I'll fast to "end" terrorism and religious hate! No, no desert for me, I'll just have a SINGLE burger, hold the cheese, pickle, lettuce, tomato and condoments. Frys? Heavens no! And a diet coke, if you please.

I'm an observant Jew. Every year, on Yom Kippur and on the 9th of Ave, I go without eating OR DRINKING for 25 hours. |

The ones putting their bodies on the line for ULTIMATE peace are the soldiers. |

Heck, I'm an observant Mormon -- I do it EVERY MONTH. Yet somehow I decline to send out a self-righteous press release. Which explains why I haven't achieved celebrity status.

That's dead on, New Hinda. Something tells me whoever wrote that press statement had their brain switched off.

That sort of explains it, but I'd say the fact you refuse to do photo spreads is far more determinant. Not to mention you probably don't even have an agent. |

I wonder if the fasters allow themselves suppositories. Some Jews use them on Yom Kippur. What day of the month do Mormons fast on? |

The day after tomorrow is the 17th of Tammuz-a sunrise to sunset fast. |

As some one who fasts at least once a year, and other times when needed, its no big deal. Its just another ego trip....piffel!

First Sunday of each month. And I've never found myself a good reason to take a suppository yet, fasting or no.

What does your fast commemorate? The fast of the 17th of Tammuz, the one I'm observing today, commemorates the day the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem. The fast of the 9th of Av, three weeks from today, commemorates the day that the First and Second Temples were burned. |

Not to be too delicate about the subject, but they'd never get the suppositories to fit. Their heads are already stuck way up in there. |
