Neville, the thing about the original "Born in the U.S.A." that struck me was that, although it was a protest song, it didn't SOUND like a protest song. It may have been angry, but it wasn't bitter or mean. The character the Boss was singing about may have "nowhere to run and nowhere to go," but he was clearly nowhere near giving up. And I firmly believe that the refrain wasn't meant to be ironic. The character may be frustrated by how he has been treated by his own country, but he's still proud to be a part of that country.
The remake is another story. There's no exuberance there. It was indeed bitter and nasty, and the refrain dripped with sarcasm. Methinks the Boss has gotten meaner with age. Would you say our views on this particular song are pretty close?
And now for you, Pip. (Mwa-ha-ha!) C'm'ere, girl.
Dissing Bob Seger, are we? Trashing Night Moves and Like A Rock?
(long pause)
THWAP!!!
Gangway! I just thwapped a short 'n' angry redhead who survived Freddy Got Fingered! And I'm NOT stickin' around for her response!
(While Brad tries in vain to escape Pip's wrath, we now return to our regularly scheduled thread.) |

Back on topic....
Dolly Parton showed how well restraint could work when singing "I Will Always Love You," then Whitney Houston had to go and screw it up by trying to turn the song into the next Gotterdamerung.
Celine Dion had to tax her vocal cords to the limit when she sang "If You Asked Me To," but the original was sung by Patti LaBelle, who made it sound so easy.
Gotta run! That redhead spotted me! |

OK, this needs to be said. First, Bob Seger. I can't stand Bob Seger. He might be the single worst thing about classic rock stations.
Not worse than Foghat. Actually, they were an OK band but if I hear slow Ride one more time I'm gonna go postal. And yes, Seeger freakin' sux.

I've always though the original sounded angry enough, but the rock instrumentation made it more palatable, as it sounds full of energy instead of rage.
The new version, which I've only heard in live recordings drains that energy, it sounds much more quiet, it's more like a lament. I heard it once or twice, then forgot about it. I just don't like it enough to analise it any further. |

I haven't heard the "Dirty Laundry" cover. I'm probably better off that way. I'm not big on the "Boys of Summer" cover, although I don't know that I actively hate it.
Surprised no one's brought up 311's cover of the Cure's "Love Song." Musically, it isn't horrible...their slight reggae/ska tweaking and slowing down of the original melody is interesting, and seems to fit the song all right. But gads, the vocals! And it's not just trying to match up to Robert Smith, they're just not good period. Robert Smith has a talent for making his vocals sound pleading, but still masculine. He made it sound like the song was welling up from his heart as he sang it. Hexum just kind of sings the song as if there's really no emotion behind it. (Granted, Smith wrote the song as a wedding gift, so naturally he'd have more invested in it emotionally, but Hexum didn't even try.)
I recently heard a cover of "You Spin Me Round" by Dead or Alive. Don't know the band, but apparently it was a hard rock/metal group. I actually dug it. I also found a country, folkish cover on the internet. It was horrifying.
One band, Disturbed, seems to do these once an album. Their first album had a cover of Tears for Fears' "Shout." I was not very fond of it, and not just as a TfF fan. They've got one on the radio now that's a cover of "Land of Confusion" by Genesis. It seems to be a better fit for them.
And Alien Ant Farm's video for "Smooth Criminal" is one of the most entertaining music videos of all time. I wasn't sure what to think of the song, but the video sold me on it, and I got into the cover after a couple listens.
---------------- Me, I'm waiting for Dimmu Borgir to cover "The Safety Dance." |

Walking through the supermarket the other days and heard someone doing a cover of the Cars' "Drive". Hated it. Frankly, I don't listen to radio stations anymore anyway. The beauty of iTunes and CDs is I never have to.
BTW, speaking of covers, go to:

then click on Greatest Cover Songs under "Songs". It'll also show you a list of the worst covers ever. |

This isn't exactly a remake, but it's close enough, and it's the weirdest one I've seen.

For some reason a Japanese company decided to take this song and use it as the theme for a children's anime, Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar.

When the show first aired I went to look for the OP, and all I thought I had found it, downloaded it (shame, shame, I know), and of course, it was the Rubettes version. |

I've heard about fifteen seconds total of Pat Boone's heavy metal covers. Fifteen seconds too many. I'm with Flange on this one.
And Pip will be SO relieved to know we see eye-to-eye on at least one thing: tribute bands and albums are a great resource for fertilizer disguising itself as song covers.
Could we count "A Fifth of Beethoven" and "Midnight Blue" as song covers? Old Ludwig B must've been doing a whirling dervish in his grave when THOSE masterpieces came out. |

Hi, first post here. I've just got to comment on this one.
I'd never become angry when hearing a cover before, but I'm absolutely livid over the way the Scissor Sisters completely castrated Comfortably Numb (and yes, castrated is the proper term here). I caught it once on MTV and I just sat there slack-jawed that anyone could produce something so completely at odds with everything the original expressed so perfectly. I mean, a disco beat?

I'm a long time Jabootu reader. I stumbled into the forums a few months back wondering why there hadn't been any updates, and I've been lurking here ever since. I'm a late-30's American male geek with a variety of interests who's been living in Japan for the last decade. I'm not a huge film buff like some of you here, but I hope to throw in my two cents from time to time. Thanks. |

New guys alert! Dibs on his spleen!...you did fill out the Jabootu Orgen Doner Card, right? Welkomen! Livin in Japan, eh? Conciter yer self on call when Kaiju is the subject.
In a spin off from the topic...anyone ever hear a parody they liked better then the original? Anytime the oldies station starts playing "American pie", i sing along...useing Weird Al Yankovics words...trust me, it makes a lot more sence the Don McLean's lyrics eved did! Even better when you have someone in the car, who slowly realises what your doing...the look? Pricless!

OMG! And to think I once critisiced Van Morrison's take on this very song... they sound just like the Bee Gees. And yes, "The Wall" rules. |

Permission to vomit, your honor?
Altair, if you get your mitts on these dopes, let me know if you need someone to hold them down. This. Was..... Ugggghhhh!!!
On a somewhat related note, does anyone know who did the cover for Comfortably Numb used in The Departed? That was a pretty decent cover, IMO. |
