NIGHT OF THE LEPUS.
Most of the time, your average monster picture, has a threat creature that we can respect.
Big, strong, lethal, hungry....
But, as by the title posted above...some times, those atributes just don't cut it.
Sometimes, the threat is to laugh.
Sure, a 600lb rabbit could be a killer. Check out the teeth! But, the ability to overcomme the dis-belief needed can't make an impression, no matter how hard the filmmakers try.
Sooooo......
My question : What other absurd monsters have been tried, and what was needed to make them work?
Would a head as stylish as Rodan's have made THE GIANT CLAW a respectable creature?
Or, does haveing nostrils like the air scoops on a Camero, just ruin any such chance?

My problem is that computer graphics monsters and other special efffects like walls coming to life look just like that; computer effects. They look like apparitions and not something tangible. While the technology is gtetting better they still arnt at all scary and often laughable. Give me "Susperia" or the origional "King Kong" any day. With their handmade monsters and effects they have a weight to them and are genuinely sacry and affecting. Having good stories, origionality and wit also helps.

"Gremlins". It's hard to be afraid of a MUPPET or anything you can kick for a field goal.
"The Creeping Terror". "Oh help, carpet on a rampage."

I will never forget the scene in "NIGHT OF THE LEPUS" when the sheriff runs into the drive-in, shouting that "GIANT RABBITS" are going to eat them all!
Tim The Wizard: "It's just a little bunny! Oh, it's nothing to be afraid of!"
King Arthur: "Oh shut up!"

I always thought that it was hard to be afraid of a crying baby (see "It's Alive" and it's sequels)

I'm probably cheating here, but Torgo from "Manos: The Hands of Fate". If I remember correctly, at least one of the guys from MST3K argued that Torgo was indeed a monster because of his ridiculously deformed, inflated thighs. And no, it didn't work.

In the "Jurassic Park" movies, for the dinosaurs to "work" it required that no potential human adversary demonstrate competency with firearms.

It's been about 37 years since I've seen it, and I'm guessing I didn't get much out of it because I was a kid when I saw it, but the idea of THE MONOLITH MONSTERS would seem pretty "unscarry": rock crystals grow, fall over and break, the pieces grow bigger and fall, and so on and so on --- sort of like the dominos that conquered the world. From what I've read, it actually is a good movie (which I will have to check out again), but come on -- rocks that fall over?

I was quite let down when I learned, watching Humanoids from the abyss were mutated salmons. I can't be scared of pink slice of meat, no matter if it is served hot or cold.

Well, to be fair, the director got the idea and upon seeing a baby crying the way the little tykes can just wail like that, he thought "Jeez, if this thing had the ability to do so, it would kill everybody in the room."

I would probably say the half melted bear suit in Prophecy was pretty dumb.

One of my favorite all-time stupid movie monsters are the ones from an early-90s DTV flick called THE CRAWLERS. The monsters were killer mutant tree roots! 90-minutes of people getting whipped, dragged, and strangled by what looks like disguised garden hoses.

Here's my review of it with stills: http://www.foywonder.com/dc_review_archives/foy_FHTOcrawlers.html

I always enjoy it when the film producers deliberately make no effort at all to disguise the cheapness of their monsters. Who can forget the monster in Dark Star who looked like a beachball with feet. It was indeed a beachball with feet.

Chucky, or any other killer doll for that matter. Creepy perhaps but once they have lost the element of surprise no killer doll is a threat you can take seriously.

I haven't seen them but aren't there some killer worm movies out there?

Let us not forget the giant paper-mache turkey that terrorized *cough* Earth in THE GIANT CLAW.

How about Mothra? It's... a moth. A bigass moth, perhaps, but still... a moth.

Unfortunately, yep.

While on the subject, GingerDEAD Man featuring Gary Busey as a killer cookie. No. Really. And Jack Frost About a killer snowman who is not played by Michael Keaton. Got to love killers who can be done in by a balmy spring afternoon and stuff.
