Don Imus should have been fired years ago. I once heard him say of a black female tennis player that "she looks like she eats missionaries for breakfast". Ha Ha. The difference here is the target, those wonderful girls from Rudgers, who are just that, young girls. One dreams of being a school teacher, another dreams of being a lawyer. To call them hos or whores, without even knowing any of them, is simply disgusting. As they say in the old country that is going beyond the beyond. There is another issue and thats this hiphop prison culture. Thats where Imus got this jargon and attitude. For white teenagers delving into this is a tantilizing game from which they can easily quit. For many black teenagers its a tempting but distructive message that contributes to ruined lives.

The sanctity of free speech is probably my most passionately held belief, however, it’s hard not to laugh at this racist old blatherskite getting his. As we all know, the constitution doesn’t guarantee you a microphone. A few years ago, a local (but somewhat well known) radio host, Howie Carr, made a passing remark about Imus’s age. Donny blasted back that Carr’s wife was sleeping with a black boxer. (Ah, that classy liberal wit!) Mrs Carr hired Alan Dershowitz, and as I understand it, the resulting libel settlement bought them a condo in Florida. You pretty much gotta smile.
Perhaps even more loathsome is how that decrepit jackass thought he could inoculate himself to his elitist compatriots by dragging Sharpton on his show like some good-luck troll doll. The intellect of schoolyard bully, the guts of dyspeptic squirrel; good riddance.

| Don Imus probably should have stuck to his nuking device and funny skits like the one where the seven dwarves showed Snow White their "donkey kongs" |

Don Imus is just too old to be "cutting edge" on the fly , anymore. I feel sorry for him. I seriously don't think he deserves to be tagged as a racist (just a dumb ass) and I don't think he's being treated fairly. However, when you are in his line of work, you have to accept the consequences of public opinion. He just needs to step down\retire. There are plenty of other ways for him to make money (this particular incident may even help him in that regard - book deals, etc.)

Ah yes, TBM, classy liberal wit. We all know conservatives always hold themselves to high standards as far as humor. Like saying feminism is there to help ugly women get into the mainstream. Or joking about putting rat poison in S.C. justices' desserts. Or referring to presidential candidates as "faggots." Or all those simply UPROARIOUS blowjob and dick jokes regarding Clinton. Yessir, total class all the way!
Both sides have their share of loudmouthed morons who make tasteless jokes, and pretending otherwise is intellectually dishonest at best. The end.
(Is Imus even liberal? Never really listened to him.)
I think firing him is less likely to have a long-term impact on him than leaving him on the air would have. If he'd watched his advertisers disappear, and his ratings drop, and his show shrivel up and blow away, maybe he'd see that changes had to be made. (And if he'd somehow gotten MORE advertisers and HIGHER ratings, well...I'm sure the money would've soothed his bosses' consciences.) Simply getting fired after public pressure, after a history of comments like this going by unchecked, is likely to make him think it was just a case of CBS having no guts, and him simply trying to find someplace else that'll let him be him. It worked for his mortal enemy, Howard Stern.
-------------------- Just one man's opinion. Except that second paragraph. That's pure truth, baby. |

You're right there Rev., no side of the political spectrum has a copyright on acting like a jackass. (Just look at Michael "Savage", another fringe am radio imbecile.) I only call Imus a liberal in the modern colloquial (rather ironic) sense of the word. While he was an Clintonian water carrier, he displayed the brand of sneering elitism so often exhibited by those whose besmirch everything the term "liberal" originally stood for. Basically, he was just trying to suck up to the beautiful people, but that type of posture doesn’t exactly earn you everlasting ironclad respect.
I would however add, that all those less then classy jabs at Clinton were pretty much brought on by his own disgraceful actions, certainly no comparison to the type of unmotivated slurs Imus has launched against Jews, African Americans, etc.

Once again, European anti-American conspiracy theorists have deduced the truth of the situation. Why was Don Imus fired? Because he was about to expose the truth about the government's role in 9/11. BRILLIANT~!

He can't expose it if he doesn't have a radio show? |

| How long do you think it will take for some station to offer Imus another show, showing what champions of free speech they are and blowing their ratings through the roof? |

| What bothers me is the station's kowtowing to Sharpton. If Imus had been fired because the ratings of his show plummeted or because his sponsers were being boycotted, it would have been a case of, as the Bog Man said, the First Amendment not guaranteeing you a microphone. But the station shouldn't have given in to a vicious racist like Sharpton. |

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are charlatans, and are a detriment to the very communities that they claim to represent. But that is their problem and does not mitigate Don Imus' idiocy and very hurtful statements about these wonderful young girls. Attacking the president is one thing. He is a grownup and deserves it and can take it. These girls do not deserve to be called whores. Imus can go. The show has also deteriorated into a love-fest and self-promotion for Imus and his various enterprises. It used to be free and funny. No longer. Imus will probably cut a deal with satellite radio anyway and get rich doing it.

Well said New Hinda. Imus was\is not spewing hate. Only stupidity. There IS a difference. Just ask Louis Farrakan (though to be fair - he's lightned up, once he faced up to his mortality - i.e. his impending death by cancer)

I agree with you, too, RossM - but I don't think Imus was insinuating that the young ladies were "whores". I'm inclined to believe that he moronically tried to use "hip" vernacular and it backfired on him.
